When I got off the plane, I took a direct bus to Nishinomiya, a city where Murakami used to spend his childhood. The city lies between Osaka and Kobe, an area known as Hanshin area (derived from two cities’ kanji pronunciation). Hanshin area was between sea and mountains, a beautiful and peaceful residential area, despite a great earthquake several decades ago. Nishinomiya is among the bigger cities in this area, with many apartment buildings in contrast to many single-family houses typical here. I decided not to spend time in Nishinomiya for the cold weather and tight schedule, although I knew there were a famous river and bowl-shaped mountain. I heard there was a park related to Murakami in Ashiya, so I pulled up my Google Maps and headed towards it. I was wrong this time; it was not this Ashiya City Park, but the Uchide Park in Ashiya city.
